the letterpress printing process

The cards feature my designs which I hand linocut to create a relief block used to print directly on to the card or paper.

The cards are hand printed on a foot-operated treadle 'platen' letterpress machine and each different colour is printed separately. Consequently, each card varies slightly making them unique.

The impression in the paper of the type and linocut adds to the appeal of letterpress printing.

Letterpress printing is the oldest printing technique; a raised surface is inked and then pressed against paper to obtain an image in reverse. The use of 'moveable type' was invented by Johann Gutenberg around 1450. In this mass production age it is rare to find any commercial printers using this process today.
